National Programs

Sigma Beta Club

Director Bro. Ali Khan

Young men need positive male role models in their lives. That’s not a quote from a movie it is a fact, the Chapter started their Sigma Beta Club four years ago with that message of being “positive” as its central mission. The interaction in the classroom is mixed with field trips and community service covering a range of topics including professions, being a better man and etiquette and dress. Enriching these young men will take time and resources but the Chapter is committed to not letting the ills of society shallow them up and spit them into a system that will not help them. It is simple as the more they see positive the more they will be positive about who they are. Honorable. Bro. Jeffery Whitmore is an example of the commitment is by searching for activities to better these young men. He looks outside the box, so the activity not only teaches a life lesson its produces a life moment.

Social Action

Director, Bro. Theodore Williams

Social issues do not take time off or go away due to conditions in the community. The chapter has been anchored to Healing & Hope 4 Homeless for the last ten years by participating in their bi monthly grocery give away, mobile response hot meals and hygiene pass out and the annual Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner along with the Sorority Sisters from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Bro. Woodrow Bailey brought his 501c3 nonprofit to the chapter as a way of returning on an investment Brothers made in him.   Also volunteering at various cities health fairs, working at National Night out with local Law Enforcement and any endeavor to make South Los Angeles better. No matter what time of year in fundraising for March of Dimes, pouring rain or 100-degree days the Chapter never sleeps on serving others.

Education

Director Bro. Jovon Dukes

The direction of the next generation of leaders must come from the Leaders of today, the Chapter is heavily involved in mentoring those future Leaders by working in mentorship programs, participating in Adopt A Classroom and giving out books to children eager to learn. The Brothers often speak not only on their expertise in their chosen profession they offer life lessons, so these young men and women can see that these Brothers were once them and showing them the importance of reaching back to bring the leaders in. Education is a key to open any door in your life, but you need those keys to be successful.  No student is turned away and Brothers are often sought out by students to get extra assistance. Bro. Shawn Moorer, Principal of the LAUSD Boys Academic Leadership Academy in south Los Angeles is the educational leader that is pushing the mission of mastering one’s fate through education.

Bigger and Better Business

Director, Bro. Lee McGill

The program that builds the business of doing better is headlined by the VITA/TCE (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/ Tax Counseling for the Elderly) during the income tax season. Chapter Brothers are certified through the IRS to assist those in need with tax preparation and counseling. Based in the city of Hawthorne for the last four years the financial impact in the community is where the difference is. Founded in 2009 by the late Brother Kent (KC) Cordington and launched in in 2010 serving on average one hundred citizens a season with thousands of dollars in tax refunds. When started the site was the only African American Fraternity or Sorority chapter to run its own VITA site from beginning to end. It is now a model of consistency in showing others to help those who get the assistance they deserve.
